When booking on Tatkal
Make sure you are online dot at 10 am if you want to be certain of getting a seat. 10 am is when booking for 3A, 2A, and First Class takes place. In case you are traveling by second class sleeper, the Tatkal time for that is 11 am. And of course, Tatkal booking can be done just one day before the date of travel. Note- It is one day and not 24 hours, so for a train leaving at 11pm tomorrow night, Tatkal booking has to be done at 10 am today.

Tatkal reservation can open 2 or more days in advance: Tatkal reservation opens 1 day in advance at 10 am for ac class and at 11am for non-ac class. But if the train departs from your boarding station one day after it begins its journey from its originating station, then Tatkal reservation will open 2 days in advance for your journey. For example, the tatkal ticket from Delhi to Mumbai in Punjab Mail (12138) opens 2 days in advance because the train departs from Delhi on the 2nd day of its journey! Similarly, advance reservation period, in this case, is 121 days and not 120 days.
