Railways Goes Green

Western Railways has installed a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle crushing machine for the very first time in train 12951 Mumbai Central New Delhi Rajdhani Express. Mumbai Rajdhani is a super fast express train that runs between Mumbai Central and New Delhi. The bottle crusher machine can crush around 3,000 bottles every day. Recently, Indian Railways has also banned the use of single-use plastics. To put a step forward in Swachh Bharat and Go Green missions, PET bottle crushing machine is installed in train by Ministry of Railways.

The initiative by the Western Railways of installation of PET bottle crushing machine is likely to reduce the carbon footprints by 100 percent recycling of plastic. In addition, it will also avoid unnecessarily litter of bottles waste.

Such crusher machines can accept all types of plastic bottles ranging from 200ml to 2.5 litres capacity. Along with this, it has an internal storage bin of around 20 litres which means it can store around 1500 bottles. To attract the passengers and spread awareness about the plastic ban, Western Railways has also set up selfie booths at Churchgate and Andheri stations.

On Independence Day, PM Modi urged India to stop the use of single-use plastic. In his speech, PM Modi had pitched for India to go plastic-free. “Can we free India from single-use plastic? The time to impose such a proposal has come. My teams will be mobilised to work in this direction. A significant step will be taken on October 02, 2019, said PM Modi.

On March 27, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate change amended the Plastic Waste Management rules (2016). According to the new law, manufacturers, suppliers ( plastic products) and sellers of plastic throughout the nation will now be required to stop the use of plastic made products within two years.
