Public Fridge at Railway Station

No more food wastage from now on. In order to avoid food wastage and help needy people, Indian Railways has taken an excellent step!! A Public fridge has been installed at Hubli Railway Station, Karnataka. By this initiative, travellers, as well as food staff, can keep excess of food rather than throwing it. It is a very thoughtful start by the Ministry of Railways to prevent wastage of food and provide aid to poor people.

The food stored in public fridge can be used by anyone who is willing to eat it like Senior citizens, differently-abled, divyangjan and sick passengers. The new move was launched on August 15, 2019, and is widely accepted by the people. It has also come to notice that more than 100 people have used the refrigerator already.

As per the officials, the fridge is six-foot-tall having four racks. Out of which, two racks are for cooked meals and remaining two for fruits and vegetables. An official informed that the price of the refrigerator is Rs. 80,000.

If passengers are carrying surplus food then, no need to worry. They can keep the extra food in the public fridge that too for free!! Needy or poor people are not required to pay anything to have food from that fridge.

Additionally, a notice has also been put up on the fridge, appealing staff and passengers, not to keep non-veg products and eatables as it can get stale in a short span of time. Moreover, Indian Railways has requested food plaza that is located at the Hubli railway station to contribute the excess of food items as and when available. As Hubli Railway Station comes under South Western Railway Zone (SWR), they are also striving to contact NGOs to supply food in public refrigerator.
