Northern Railway (NR) and North Central Railway (NCR) zone have come up with a modified automatic signalling system that restricts the number of trains between two stations during a foggy season. With this, railway lines would be equipped with continuous track circuiting which will consequently enhance the level of safety.

In order to avoid any kind of mishap and delay of trains, loco pilots who run trains in foggy weather conditions are given a Fog PASS Device (a handheld portable mechanism) based on global positioning system (GPS) which is usually not installed on a locomotive.

It serves as an aid for the crew during foggy weather through an audiovisual alarm, wherever any landmark comes within the Geo-fence range. Location of stations, warning boards, signals, level crossing gates and whistle for Level crossing (W/L) boards in the section is fed in the equipment. It also displays speed of the locomotive, distance and time taken by locomotive to reach landmarks. As of now around 12,205 Fog PASS Devices have been provided by railways.

In addition to this, the Ministry of Railways is also taking a step forward in safety level by painting luminous paints and strips on the signal sighting boards. Boards like passenger boards, goods warning boards, station signals, interlocked level crossing gates, semaphore signal arms are going to be painted to improve the visibility of the signal aspects to the loco pilots.
