Gymnasiums and yoga institutes are allowed to open their doors for fitness enthusiasts from 05 August (Wednesday) onwards. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has released fresh guidelines to maintain social distancing norms in gyms and yoga centres amid COVID-19 pandemic. However spas, saunas and swimming pools will remain closed while yoga institutes and gyms in containment zones will be out of bounds. Only those outside the containment zones are allowed to open up. Let us now have a look at the guidelines that will be applicable only in non-containment zones.

Use of face cover or mask is compulsory within the premises. However, during yoga exercise or exercising in gymnasiums, a face shield can be used. Wearing marks during exercise, especially N-95 masks can cause difficulty in breathing.

Frequent handwashing with soap or alcohol-based sanitizers is advisable.

Spitting is strictly prohibited.

It is mandatory for individuals to install and use the Aarogya Setu app

All the gymnasiums and yoga institutes have been instructed to plan fitness activities keeping the floor area of 4m sq per person.

Equipment and machines must be placed at a distance of 6 feet to facilitate social distancing.

Gyms and yoga centres must use outdoor space wherever possible. There should be a proper marking on the floor to ensure 6 ft distancing. Those having oxygen saturation below 95% will not be allowed to exercise.

For air conditioners, the guidelines by CPWD (Central Public Works Department) should be followed. The temperature of ac should be between 24-30 degree Celsius.

The institutes have also been asked to create specific pathways for entry and exit points into the premises by using floor or wall markings. Regular and timely disinfection of premises, machines, equipment also needs to be carried out.

Sessions should be staggered with a minimum gap of 15-30 minutes between classes to avoid overlap between members arriving and leaving.

Restricting the number of people per group in a fitness class should be based on the size of the room and the nature of the activity.

Only asymptomatic persons (including staff) be allowed in the premises.

Elderly people above 65 years of age, people suffering from chronic diseases, pregnant women and children below 10 years of age are advised to stay at home.

Individuals must maintain a minimum distance of 6 feet in public places.
