As India continues to go through the second phase of lockdown that is supposed to end on May 3, there are reports about the extension of lockdown. Captain Amarinder Singh - CM of Punjab has decided to extend the lockdown by nearly two more weeks i.e. till May 17. Punjab is the first state that has extended its lockdown beyond May 3. However some relaxation would be given in the areas that are not in red zones.
At the end of the scheduled first phase of lockdown too Punjab was among the first few states that had unilaterally extended lockdown even before the union government had announced a formal extension by three weeks. In addition to this Telangana has already extended lockdown until May 7, four days more than the nation-wide lockdown. On the other hand, the Odisha Chief Minister has also asked for another month of lockdown.
The Punjab government has also announced that the curfew will be relaxed in the state from 7 AM to 11 AM in non-red and non-containment zones. Furthermore relaxation would be announced depending on the rise in the COVID-19 cases. Till now Punjab has recorded a total of 480 confirmed cases with 20 deaths. The number of coronavirus cases in India climbed to 35070 while the number of fatalities rose to 1159. Meanwhile more than 3.3 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally. The lockdown has helped in slowing down the spread of the COVID-19 with which, states like Goa, Manipur, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim are free of the disease. Besides this the Tamil Nadu government has ended the complete shutdown in Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore. The complete shutdown was imposed from April 26 for four days as there was a rise in the number of COVID-19 cases. During that time, even grocery shops were shut down. Tamil Nadu government has now announced relaxation for businesses that are selling essential commodities and can open their shops from 6 AM to 5 PM. The total number of coronavirus cases in Tamil Nadu spiked to 2323 with 27 deaths.
