After a gap of more than a month the Indian Railways will gradually restart passenger train operations in a phased manner from May 12 with 15 pairs of trains (30 return journeys). These trains will run as special trains from New Delhi station connecting Dibrugarh, Agartala, Howrah, Patna, Bilaspur, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Secunderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Madgaon, Mumbai Central, Ahmedabad and Jammu Tawi.
Indian Railways will start more special service trains on new routes based on the available coaches after reserving 20,000 coaches for COVID-19 care centres. Besides an adequate number of coaches would be reserved to ensure operation of up to 300 Shramik special trains everyday for the stranded migrants. Here is the list of trains that are scheduled to be run from May 12 onwards:
Booking for reservation on these trains will start from May 11 at 6 PM and will be available only on the IRCTC website. Ticket booking counters at the railway stations will remain closed and no counter tickets including platform tickets will be issued. Passengers with only valid confirmed tickets will be allowed to enter railway stations. Booking of RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation), waiting list (WL) ticket will not be applicable on such trains. There will be no provision of tatkal quota (TQ), premium tatkal quota (PT) and current booking. Passengers travelling in these trains will not be eligible for concession on train tickets. The passengers travelling on the train will be screened for coronavirus and those found asymptomatic will be allowed to travel. Railway board has also added that it will be mandatory for all the passengers to keep his or her mouth covered by a face cover.
The development comes a day ahead of the Prime Minister's video conference with the chief ministers of all states to discuss post lockdown strategy. All modes of public transportation were suspended since the imposition of the lockdown beginning March 25. However on May 1 only Shramik special trains carrying stranded migrant workers were flagged off from various stations to help them reach their hometown. Till now Indian Railways have operated a total of 366 shramik special trains across the country out of which 287 trains have reached its destination and 79 trains are in transit.
