Overview
The railways are implementing plans to modernise 1,000 small but important stations through the new "Amrit Bharat Scheme." This is besides the ambitious plan of revamping 200 big stations under a different redevelopment program. Officials have stated that they will identify small stations based on the cities they are catering to and their footfalls.
One official said that Indian Railways would carry out the modernisation of the station cost-effectively. Decisions will be taken by the Divisional Railway Managers (DRMs) according to requirements. A special fund will also be set aside for this purpose with the DRMs.
The scheme document states that it aims to prepare master plans for railway stations and implement them in phases that are inclusive but not limited to the minimum essential facilities and the creation of roof plazas and city centers at stations.
The scheme aspires to introduce new amenities while upgrading and replacing existing facilities.
New Facilities Under the Scheme
Platforms
All categories of railway stations under the scheme will be provided with high-level platforms. The length of the platforms will generally be 600m. Special attention will be given to the platform's drainage facility. Theft-resistant covers that are aesthetically designed will be used to cover the drains.
Internet/Wi-Fi
The scheme will also provide free Wi-Fi access at the stations to train travellers. There will also be suitable spaces for 5-G towers.
Multi-design Furniture
Multi-design furniture will be gradually phased out as part of the scheme. The current furniture used at platforms, waiting rooms, offices, and retiring rooms will be reviewed. If required, more durable and comfortable furniture will be installed.
Facilities for Divyangjan
The Divyangjan amenities at the stations will be as per regulations and norms enacted by the railway from time to time. Toilets shall be provided in sufficient numbers at stations of all categories for differently-abled persons. The toilets will be designed and constructed to be prominently visible, easily accessible, and appropriate for station usage.
Enhanced Passenger Experience
The Amrit Bharat Scheme envisions stations upgrading with the long-term vision of continuous development. It will provide passengers with transit facilities characterised by efficiency, convenience, and comfort. It is a very meticulous master plan with the main objective of catering to the requirements of each individual station.
The central idea behind implementing the Scheme is to bring the facilities of smaller railway stations up to speed with those of the more prominent cities. The application of the various measures, including new facilities while renovating and improving existing ones, is guaranteed to enhance the passenger experience.
