The Ministry of Railways is taking several precautionary measures for the safety of passengers travelling through trains. First such initiative taken by railways for the hygiene of passengers is automated face mask and sanitizer vending machine at Patna (PNBE) junction. It is the first-ever kiosk that has been installed in the East Coast Railway (ECoR) zone at Patna (PNBE) junction and second by the Indian Railways as the first face mask and hand sanitizer machine was installed at Nagpur (NGP) railway station on May 18.
Passengers who have forgotten to carry face mask/hand sanitizer with them can now buy the masks or hand sanitizers at affordable prices through the machine. The vending machine is equipped with a touchscreen display that facilitates the price of the products. It has a capacity of vending 48 different items. As of now the masks of various qualities and the bottle of hand sanitizers (travel-size) have been put in the vending machine. For the convenience of the passengers the price list of every item has been displayed on the kiosk. The machine accepts both coins & paper currency. It also has the capability to dispense the remaining change.
Automated thermal scanners
Similarly in order to make the process of thermal scanning easy the railway board has installed an automated thermal scanner to check the body temperature at Howrah (HWH) and Asansol (ASN) stations. It is a very thoughtful step by the Indian Railways as it would reduce both time consumed in checking all passengers entering the stations and the manpower involved in handling such equipment.
Vehicle-mounted sprayer & touch-free washbasin
At the same time, a touch-free wash basin has been installed at Guwahati (GHY) railway station to help passengers wash their hands without touching the tap or soap dispenser. The tap cum dispenser has been developed using refurbished materials that were available in the railway workshop. Apart from this vehicle-mounted sprayer is also being used to disinfect the parking areas, waiting rooms, platforms, stairs and lifts at the Faizabad (FD) station. Such mechanisms are very helpful and cost-effective to contain the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.
Automated ticket checking and managing access (ATMA)
To ensure a contactless entry of train travellers Central Railway (CR) has installed an Automated ticket-checking and managing access (ATMA) facility at Nagpur (NGP) railway station. The machine is equipped with technology that can scan the body temperature of travellers by people sitting on the booth who can also check whether the passengers are wearing a mask or not. On getting a green signal on the thermal screening traveller needs to show the ticket that is scanned without any touch.
There is a high definition camera in the booth that checks the ID proof and ticket of the person. After that the person manning the booth gives go-ahead to the traveller. A LED screen is also provided for Indian Railway Protection Force (IRPF) jawans to monitor the traveller movement. This system is a boon for staff working at the check-in process including the medical professionals and RPF personnel.
