Overview
The Indian Railway has discontinued the AC-3 Economy (3E) services. This new category was introduced some 14 months ago. These coaches were introduced in September 2021, and the fare for berths in these coaches was around 6-8% less than usual 3AC coaches.
Despite being newly introduced, this category of coaches is no longer available for reservation. In the past, the bookings were available under a separate category. The AC-3 Economy will be merged with the AC-3 tier, though the prices will be the same. As per the reports available, the merger of both coaches will take place within the next four months.
The number of AC-3 Economy coaches is currently 463 as compared to 11,277 AC-3 normal coaches, so the impact will not be significant. Passengers riding in AC-3 coaches, and linen has been included in these coaches, which had not previously been available. Each passenger will be charged approximately Rs. 60-70 extra for linen.
The railway had claimed the new AC-3 Economy coaches are “the most affordable air-conditioned” train travel in the world. Standard AC-3 coaches have 72 berths, while AC-3 Economy coaches have 83 berths.
