Starting November 1, 2024, Indian Railways will reduce its ticket reservation window from 120 days to 60 days. This change, announced by the Railway Board, affects all future bookings except those made before October 31, which will still follow the 120-day period. Trains like the Taj Express and others with shorter booking windows remain unaffected, and the 365-day Advance Reservation Period (ARP) for international tourists is still valid. This policy shift aims to streamline the booking process and minimize speculative ticketing.
Why the Change?
The Railway Board did not disclose a specific reason, but the move might address operational efficiency, reduce speculative bookings, and allow more flexibility in the reservation system. By reducing the ARP, passengers are encouraged to finalize their travel plans within a shorter timeframe, which could lead to a more dynamic and manageable reservation process.
Impact on Passengers
While the shortened booking window might require some adjustments for travellers accustomed to booking far in advance, passengers can still cancel tickets booked beyond 60 days. The policy marks a return to pre-2015 practices when the ARP was also set at 60 days before being extended to 120 days.
Exceptions to the New Rule
Certain popular trains, including short-distance express services like the Taj Express, which already have smaller booking windows, will remain unaffected by the policy change. Additionally, foreign tourists planning long-term visits to India will continue to enjoy the 365-day ARP, ensuring their travel plans are not disrupted.
The move reflects Indian Railways' effort to modernize and refine its booking procedures. Passengers planning journeys from November onward should be mindful of the new 60-day reservation window to avoid inconveniences in securing tickets.
