Indian Railways is set to launch a new passenger-friendly service for home delivery of products in the near future. The door-to-door delivery service for individual and bulk customers has already begun to be tested by the railways. The Indian Railways intends to launch the services in the same way as courier businesses and e-commerce companies do.
It intends to do so by developing an app(just like Trainman app) and providing consumers with receipts that include a QR code that can be used to track their shipments. The app or website will also provide the projected cost and time required to complete a single delivery.
India Post and other firms are also being courted by the Indian Railways in order to gain a foothold in the growing logistics market. By June-July of this year, the first such service would be available in Delhi-NCR and Gujarat's Sanand Sector.
The railways have enlisted the help of the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation (DFCC). Indian Railways has also directed the development of a module by several of its railway zones. In Mumbai, there will be another test run. Aside from that, the DFCC has started an internal trial of the service.
How to avail the services?
To avail these new services from the Indian Railways, the customers will be given two option.
- It entails either dropping the package off at designated locations or having it picked up from their specified address, such as their homes or offices. The goods delivery service provided by the railways will be based on a transit assurance programme.
- The objective is to offer the service at a lower cost than what corporations charge to transport goods via road. Users will receive receipts with a QR code that will allow them to track their shipments using an app.
