We often hear people saying “journey is the destination”. One would understand this if they have a knack for travelling. And while a journey cannot be pleasant at all times, there are means to make one. Major steps have been taken in the past 2 years to bring about some comfort and ease to your travelling experience in indian railways. Let’s see and evaluate what are they and how are they useful to us.

Cleanmycoach: As the name suggests, for any cleaning requirements in running train, one may opt for this service just by entering their PNR either on mobile application or website. Passengers may also send their requests as SMS to 58888 by typing CLEAN <10-digit PNR number>. While I have not tried this yet, have heard some good reviews for the same.

R-Mitra:
App for women’s safety (In Suburban section of Eastern Railways only). The basic functionality of R-Mitra (Railway Mobile Instant Tracking Response and Assistance) is to alert the nearest RPF inspector and divisional security control room in case of any emergency with the press of a button only. The app works both online and offline in SMS mode by using the helpline number 56161. Oh! I accidently pressed the emergency button and got called back within 10 seconds. So although the response is great, have known it does not work many a times. So while we think, the initiative is good and on right track, it lacks implementation and operations covering very limited area geographically.

Twitter Handles: While we are all aware of the twitter handle of our Hon’ble Railway Minister ( @RailMinIndia, @PiyushGoyal), there is a list of Twitter handles of other officials too, who are equally active and may help you in times of need. Click here to see list of twitter handles of GM and Divisional Railway Managers.

Complaint Management System (COMS): For lodging a complaint/feedback or giving a suggestion, there is this mobile application and website that comes handy. Again a good initiative for our digital India but needs much improvements on its operations.

Direct Numbers: There are some contact numbers and toll free numbers where one can directly call and get sorted with their issues / problems / feedbacks / suggestions etc.

Railway Train Enquiry (Chargeable): 139

Catering (Toll Free Number): 1800-111-139 & 1800-111-321

Security (Toll Free Number): 1800-111-322 & 1800-111-182

Report an incident or seek emergency help during travel: 180

For all other complaints / Services during travel: 138

So, all in all the means are on right track for India going digital way. However it needs much improvements in terms of implementation and operations. We hope to see many more such initiative from Indian Railways where any information, feedback, suggestions and complaints can be easily registered and worked upon for a better experience.
