The Northeast Frontier Railway has achieved another milestone in its mission for complete electrification by commissioning the Dudhnai-Mendipathar (22.823 Track Kilometre) single line section and Abhayapuri-Pancharatna (34.59 Track Kilometre) double line section on 15th March 2023.
The Central Organization for Railway Electrification (CORE) has completed the necessary electrification works for these sections. The Indian Railway has set an ambitious goal of becoming a net-zero carbon emitter by 2030 and is working towards that goal through various sustainability initiatives.
The north-eastern state of Meghalaya has only one operational railway station, Mendipathar, which was inaugurated by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India in 2014.
Improved punctuality and greater capacity for passenger and freight trains are expected with full sectional speeds in these sections. Furthermore, direct access to Meghalaya for electric locomotives hauling parcels and freight trains from other states will be possible.
Electrification of the train systems in Northeast India will bring about greater mobility for trains and increased efficiency in the railway system. Additionally, this transition from fossil fuels to electricity will help reduce pollution. The proposed plan will not only allow for uninterrupted traffic but also save time for trains travelling to and from northeastern states. This will, in turn, help conserve foreign exchange.
